The Stoned Ape: Pt.1

Psilocybin improves visual acuity

In the Sixties, Roland Fisher at the National Institute of Mental Health began studying the effects of psilocybin on human beings, particularly on the visual field. Here are the journals produced from these studies: 1, 2, 3

The tests involved putting the participants in an experiment where they could see two bars lining up, which would slowly part. The participants were given a buzzer to press when the two bars were no longer parallel.

One group was given a low dose of psilocybin (lower than the threshold for psychedelic activity) and the other group was just a control group, and was only given a placebo.

The results were stunning, and the psilocybin group were able to detect the deformation long before the control group could do so.

Fisher commented "its very interesting. Here we have data which argues significantly that you perceive reality better with the drug than without the drug."
